BELMONT -- June 18, 2025, Belmont Warrant Committee debates merging five municipal subcommittees into three to ease education panel burden. Chair Paul Richter presented a proposal at the June 18 meeting to consolidate the committee's current six subcommittees into four, keeping the education subcommittee as a standalone group while reducing municipal subcommittees from five to three, arguing the change would make it easier to recruit and retain members for the demanding education panel. No vote was taken; members broadly supported a one-year trial, with Jeff Lubien saying "it's worth a shot, you can always adjust, learn, and then move on," while Jack Weiss pressed for clarity on how the overall report-production process would change, not just the organizational chart. Separately, Tom Caputo warned the committee that a $1 million carbon dioxide refrigeration system ordered from Canada for the town's ice rink faces potential tariff exposure of $250,000, 25 percent of the purchase price, if it does not clear the border without triggering duties; a failed pressure test delayed the crossing until at least the weekend. Former Warrant Committee Chair Liz Ellison used public comment to urge the committee to take on formal fiscal impact analysis of development projects flowing from the MBTA Communities Act and to scrutinize what she called significant methodological flaws in an existing MBTA consultant study.
