Belmont Select Board Chair Taylor Yates says another Proposition 2½ override is coming in 2028. In a Belmont Journal interview, Yates said inflation above 3.5 percent outpaces the town's 2.5 percent annual revenue cap, forcing officials into what he called "cutting bone" on services. He pointed to a recently passed Belmont Center zoning overlay as a model for growing revenue and said the town's pension obligation, fully funded by 2032, should eventually free up "millions of dollars" a year.
November's town meeting will include funding requests for a long-stalled comprehensive plan and a new sustainability grant manager position. Yates also said a permanent fire chief search, to succeed interim Chief Andrew Tobio, likely won't open until January or February, and that the vacant Bradford retail space remains unleased after years tied up in litigation.
