Belmont's Select Board got an update this week on the completed rebuild of the parking lot and entrance at West O'Hara Field, the athletic facility off Concord Avenue that officials said will see heavy use "with all the activities that are going on."

BELMONT -- Town Administrator Patrice Garvin and DPW staff briefed the Select Board Aug. 31 on the finished reconstruction of the "jug handle" entrance serving West O'Hara Field. The project was funded through Community Preservation Act money and DPW funds, with permission from the School Department and School Committee. Officials described a new field entrance, angled parking, and a rebuilt sidewalk, and said the lot's capacity grew to 62 spaces from roughly 40. Board members praised the turnaround, noting the work wrapped before the first day of school Sept. 2 and ahead of the Sept. 1 state primary, when Town Hall served as a polling location. One member cautioned that drivers are still adjusting to the new layout, describing an incident in which a large pickup did not pull fully into a space. Staff said a black vinyl fence more than 300 feet long is expected to go in around the site as soon as next week.
