Moderator Advisory Council · Meeting of September 29, 2026

Belmont's Moderator Advisory Council previewed a crowded November special town meeting warrant and reviewed the first town meeting handbook rewrite since 2010. Town Moderator Adam said the Select Board signed the warrant the night before, adding a citizens' petition from Mike Widmer and Kathy Cohane seeking a moderator-appointed committee on the town clerk's job description, backed by 283 of 304 certified signatures gathered in under a week. Two warrant articles respond to a new state law, passed in late July, that "requires towns that don't allows... residential in certain zones to require to allow it by variance." Adam also proposed combining the Warrant Committee's eleven separate budget votes into one consent-agenda vote, which member Tommy questioned: "But why would you discuss it after you've approved it?" Council members pressed for a table of contents and glossary in the draft handbook before it goes to town counsel for review.
