Select Board hears union no-confidence vote as educators press for contract, funding priority

BELMONT — Select Board fielded union no-confidence vote from educators over school funding and contract stalemate. The Belmont Education Association announced that an overwhelming majority of its membership voted no confidence in the Superintendent, Director of Human Capital, School Committee, and Select Board regarding handling of contract negotiations and education funding. Multiple educators and residents, including School Committee Chair Moriarty, told the board that teachers working under expired contracts face larger class sizes, reduced programming, limited planning time, and salary pressures that threaten retention.
The board discussed zoning amendments for the Belmont Center Overlay District scheduled for later that evening at Town Meeting, also taking up Vice-Chair Taylor Yates' report on ongoing negotiations with the Locatelli property owner regarding parking at Claflin Street. No votes were recorded.
