Recreation Commission discusses field maintenance fees, deferred vote expected.
Recreation Commission · Meeting of February 9, 2026
Belmont Recreation Commission postpones decision on field fee increases to fund $644,000 three-year maintenance contract. Chair Mike Capitani led discussion of revenue models as the commission grapples with an estimated $80,000 annual deficit under a plan with the Tom Irwin group. Town Meeting approved a one-time $225,000 appropriation; DPW will contribute $90,000 annually; schools have not yet committed funding.
Members debated charging by field-hour versus by location, and expressed frustration that the school department set field rental fees at $35 to $50 per hour without prior consultation. The commission must resolve fee structures before spring and fall sports registration periods open.
