Economic Development Committee recommends overlay articles for Town Meeting vote

BELMONT — Economic Development Committee unanimously backs two overlay articles for Special Town Meeting. Co-Chairs Marie Warner and Jeff Broderick led the 5-0 vote recommending favorable action on the Belmont Center Overlay and Belmont Gateway Overlay, which have undergone extensive review by Town Counsel and the Select Board. Public commenters, including business owners and Town Meeting members, raised concerns about construction disruption, parking capacity, and protection of existing small businesses, but the committee stated the town is developing a separate construction management bylaw and parking management plan to address those issues.
Committee members emphasized the overlays are necessary for Belmont to remain competitive with neighboring towns.
