Belmont Town Meeting pilots consent agenda, funds Sherman Gardens housing

Belmont Town Meeting piloted a consent agenda and approved $2.9 million toward the Sherman Gardens senior housing redevelopment. Members voted 217-25 to try Moderator Adam Dash's new consent agenda tool, then adopted a combined Article 2 and Article 37 vote 244-0 for OPEB funding, which Select Board Chair Matt Taylor called "daunting numbers" against a roughly $110 million unfunded liability. Article 28's $19.4 million water and sewer appropriation was pulled from the consent agenda after Comprehensive Capital Budget Committee Chair Christine Doyle objected that "the second largest part of the budget" deserved debate; it passed 228-7 and 221-8.

Town meeting also backed $2.9 million for the 120-unit Sherman Gardens redevelopment, 230-3, and $750,000 combined for Belmont Community Path right-of-way and design work. The session adjourned at 10:36 p.m. to resume May 6.
