Belmont Select Board Names New Rink Facility Belmont Sports Complex in Unanimous Vote

BELMONT — August 25, 2025 — Belmont Select Board unanimously names new rink complex the Belmont Sports Complex, with the ice rink designated the Skip Vigarolo Rink. The vote came after more than an hour of negotiation between the board, citizen petitioners representing 258 signatories, and members of the Vigarolo family at the August 25 joint meeting with the School Committee. The compromise, brokered by Chair Matt Taylor, calls for exterior signage reading "Belmont Sports Complex, Home of the Skip Vigarolo Rink" and a permanent interior wall-of-honor plaque, leaving the broader complex name available for future sponsorship or advertising partnerships. Gail Harrington, sponsor of the Special Town Meeting citizen petition that had affirmed Vigarolo's name by roughly 56 percent earlier this year, said she could accept the arrangement "as long as the rink bears his name and it's present outside." The board also voted unanimously to award a $2,863,304 contract to Guardian Energy Management Solutions for rooftop HVAC units at the Chenery Middle School — net of nearly $400,000 in National Grid rebates and offset by a $225,000 Green Communities grant — and approved a 2 percent merit increase and contract extension to 2028 for Fire Chief David DeStefano. Town Administrator Patrice Garvin announced the resignation of Finance Director and Assistant Town Administrator Jennifer Hewitt after three years of service.
